Zack & Miri Make A Porno

Everyone raved about how hilarious Superbad was and how it was the greatest comedy of 2007 so I checked out the DVD. I kept waiting and waiting to burst with laughter and it never happened. I was even on a caffeine high and I didn’t crack a smile. I made a personal vow to self that I would avoid any movie attached to Judd Apatow or Seth Rogen. Therefore, I avoided Zack & Miri Make A Porno like it was a sequel to Battlefield Earth.

During an ordinary Saturday of errands I popped into Blockbuster and checked out the sacred New Release wall for my latest cinematic distractions. I passed by, you guessed it, Zack & Miri Make A Porno and I was really skeptical. I figured that if “Porno” was in the title that even if the jokes weren’t funny I could at least be amused by the gratuitous nudity. So I watched it. I watched it and from the first scene I was hooked in.

The movie opens with a cold morning, a newspaper boy delivering the news by bike, and a car swerving away from the biker boy and running into a fence. Then it cuts to Miri (Elizabeth Banks) and Zack (Seth Rogen) as they go through their morning ritual. I was already tearing up and this was just the opening.

When the bills start to mount and the minimum wage jobs they hold aren’t paying enough the resourceful roomies decide the best way to solve their financial crisis is to make a porn film. They can put the porno on the net and make tons of money. If it could work for Paris Hilton & Pamela Anderson then it can surely earn some substantial bread for two nobodies from Pennsylvania.

The characters in this movie are a real wild deck. Gerry Bednob plays Zack’s foul mouthed boss at the coffee shop. Craig Robinson is Zack’s fellow co-worker, Delaney, who ends up producing the budget film. Jason Mewes takes a leave of absence from the “View Askewniverse” to fill the role of eager adult film star, Lester. The two leads, Rogen & Banks, surprisingly have a great chemistry onscreen. Despite appearances they really are best buds. Zack is Miri’s number one “girlfriend” while Miri is a cool enough chick that Zack can be his complete self around. The banter between these two is a riot especially when they talk shop about sex and other mature topics.

I’ve never been a major fan of Justin Long but his role as a gay porn star is so much fun to watch. What I admired was that Long went all the way in his portrayal of “Brandon St. Randy”. He didn’t shy away with talking about the finer aspects of male/male intercourse. I swear Mr. Long based his character on adult film entrepreneur and actor ,Michael Lucas.

And while on the subject of Mr. Long’s character I have to admit that I was perplexed by Brandon Routh’s choice to play the boyfriend to St. Randy. Routh went through so much effort to refute rumors about his sexual preference during the campaign for Superman Returns and then he plays a former high school football star with a boyfriend. I’m happy he’s working and all but I don’t fully understand his reason for accepting the role.

The other weird casting choice was Traci Lords as an, ahem, event planner named “Bubbles”. I’ve always admired Ms. Lords for being one of the few adult film stars to break into the mainstream. With roles in major productions like The Tommyknockers and Blade Traci Lords broke through the “barrier”.And yet here she is in a film that deals with porn; the very thing I thought she was striving to distance herself away from. While she does great in the movie I am again puzzled why should accept that role.

One star who is not ashamed of being a porn star is actual porn star, Katie Morgan. Katie stars as the bubbly starlet, Stacey. While Zack & Miri discovered Stacey in a stripclub, I discovered Katie on HBO. At first glance, Ms. Morgan appears to be a dipsy airhead. But then I started listening to her and y’know what? She’s witty. Her interviews in HBO’s "Pornucopia" are a riot and her hosting of HBO specials such as "Katie Morgan On Sex Toys" reveal a winning personality that is tailor made for the late night circuit. Or dare I say, even morning television. Morgan just has this deadpan style of delivery where in her mind she’s just telling it like it is but to the greater populace it’s extremely amusing. If given the opportunity I think Ms. Morgan could use the current raunchy “R” comedy renaissance to springboard into mainstream Hollywood.

I know that a movie with “Porno” in the title is a red flag for explicit scenes and stuff but there’s really only one full on scene that involves complete nudity. But it’s done in such a silly and exaggerated way that all the vulgarity and taboo is sucked right out. The majority of the porn stuff is done orally……I mean, um, verbally with the characters talking about their experiences and their fantasies.

Now I’m not saying to watch this with the youngins for family night (though this might make an unorthodox and lighthearted introductory lesson about "the birds & the bees). Nope, this movie was rated "R" for a good reason. What I am saying is that adults who were afraid to rent the movie out of fear of seeing too much actual porn shouldn’t stress because there isn’t much porn to see.

Although, if you’re an adult reading this review you probably have no qualms about movies with sexually explicit material to begin with.

I think part of the reason for this film’s hilarity was Kevin Smith’s involvement. Mr. Smith wrote the story and screenplay. I originall thought it was the brainchild of Judd Apatow but I was pleasantly mistaken. I’ve heard lots of good things about Smith's View Askewniverse works like Clerks and Mallrats but never tried them out. I think I can safely say that this is my first Kevin Smith movie and if this is what his reality is like I’m gonna do some retro-digging and check out his previous films. But then why am I surprised at Smith’s genius? He reads comic books. He even owns a comic book store. Nevah, evah underestimate the talents of a geek.

I have a good number of favored scenes from Zack & Miri; the high school reunion, the first night of filming at the coffee shop, Zack’s awkward film scene with Miri, Delaney’s shouting matches with his stressed out wife (Tisha Campbell), the innocent young Barry’s (Ricky Mabe) introduction to….a different kind of love. But thanks to the age of Special Features that we live in the Zack & Miri DVD & Blu Rays contain a host of deleted scenes, bloopers and amusing behind the scenes footage of the HS reunion scene between Justin Long & Seth Rogen. No commentary, though, which is a bummer. Can you imagine all the gut-busting and embarrassing tidbits from a movie like this? Perhaps they'll address that in the anniversary edition.

If you want a good laugh, cheap thrills and naughty bits galore then give Zack & Miri Make A Porno a shot. You’ll never look at porn the same way again. Or something like that.
